Mythology High

What’s not to love about mythology, with its vengeance, violence, ego-maniacal characters and high-volume conflict? We’re moderning the myths, one tale at a time, set in the contemporary world with average teens dealing with the angst of young adulthood.

Our young adult short story series include digital shorts, released one at a time and then compiled into larger volumes. Each short story is just .99.

The series was kicked off in 2012 by Jammie Kern, a recent Liberal Arts grad from the University of Oklahoma and mom to two girls.

Jammie Kern tackles Orion’s tale in, “Ryann in the Sky,” about a very tall basketball player having a very bad year. She’s grieving the loss of her father when a back-stabbing friend tries to dethrone her from the volleyball team heading into the championship. What makes a champion, and, moreover, what makes a friend? This story of overcoming loss and rising above the fray is a beautiful read from an amazing writer.

In Kern’s gripping tale of Talos, we meet seventeen-year-old Taylor, who runs away from her verbally abusive mother to live with her Aunt Lu who owns a tanning salon. Taylor begins her transformation, going back to school, working hard at the salon, and improving her image. Yet the handsome older man, Jonnie, lures Taylor away. Just like the original bronzed Talos, envy may be Taylor’s downfall. Can she truly shape her own destiny? Jammie Kern is an emerging author to watch.

“Seal Girl” by British author Magda Knight

Ondine is the new girl at school, and with her flaming red hair, Irish accent and deformed hands, she’s used to being the odd girl out. She tells herself that she simply doesn’t care. “Geek Girl” by Magda Knight

Saying Coleen is just a geek is like saying the richest businessman earns just a tiny bit more than a Girl Scout peddling cookies door-to-door. This talented high school hacker could easily dig into any computer system to satisfy her whims, from the boy next door’s laptop to the most sophisticated mainframe system of the government. But when her secrets are revealed, Coleen knows that it could get her more than grounded—she could land in prison. And when her bestie starts falling for the sketchy new boy, she can’t resist digging into his code to search for bugs.
–Note: This is Magda Knight’s second story in her Mythology High trilogy but they are each stand-alone titles. The Mythology High short stories are all modern retellings of classic myths. “Geek Girl” is the retelling of the Irish myth, Pooka.

mythhighmirrormirrorarcIn September, the series continued  with young adult author Diana Rodriguez Wallach (Amor and Summer Secrets) with three more short stories.

Diana Rodriguez Wallach, author of the award-winning YA series Amor and Summer Secrets, will give a modern take on the myths of Narcissus and Nemesis in her new short story trilogy.
Eighteen-year-old Emmy is in the family business-trapping vapid narcissistic souls into her silver compact mirror for all eternity. It’s what the Rhamnusia family has been doing for thousands of years, all under the direction of Great Grandmother. Only Emmy’s latest assignment, Nara, is about to prove more challenging than she ever expected.
Gorgeous and self-absorbed, Nara is unflinchingly cruel to her classmates. Even her boyfriend, Luke, can no longer tolerate her actions–much to Emmy’s relief since she finds Luke a little more than intriguing. But when Emmy tricks Nara into gazing into her mystical mirror, what she finds there is not what she’s expecting.
Look for the “Mirror, Mirror” trilogy by Diana to debut in September 2013 with “Reflecting Emmy” followed by “Nara Gazing” in October and “Shattering GiGi” in November.
